Extend your ArcGIS expertise by unlocking the world of Python programming. A fully hands-on guide that takes you through exercise after exercise using real data and real problems. NOTE: This book is compatible with ArcGIS Pro 2.9.
Key FeaturesLearn the core components of the two Python modules for ArcGIS: ArcPy and ArcGIS API for PythonUse ArcPy, pandas, NumPy, and ArcGIS in ArcGIS Pro Notebooks to manage and analyze geospatial data at scaleIntegrate with ArcGIS Online using Python to publish and manage dataBook Description
Integrating Python into your day-to-day ArcGIS work is highly recommended when dealing with large amounts of geospatial data. Python for ArcGIS Pro aims to help you get your work done faster, with greater repeatability and higher confidence in your results.
Starting from programming basics and building in complexity, two experienced ArcGIS professionals-turned-Python programmers teach you how to incorporate scripting at each step: automating the production of maps for print, managing data between ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, creating custom script tools for sharing, and then running data analysis and visualization on top of the ArcGIS geospatial library, all using Python.
You’ll use ArcGIS Pro Notebooks to explore and analyze geospatial data, and write data engineering scripts to manage ongoing data processing and data transfers. This exercise-based book also includes three rich real-world case studies, giving you an opportunity to apply and extend the concepts you studied earlier.
Irrespective of your expertise level with Esri software or the Python language, you’ll benefit from this book’s hands-on approach, which takes you through the major uses of Python for ArcGIS Pro to boost your ArcGIS productivity.

This book is ideal for anyone looking to add Python to their ArcGIS Pro workflows, even if you have no prior experience with programming. This includes ArcGIS professionals, intermediate ArcGIS Pro users, ArcGIS Pro power users, students, and people who want to move from being a GIS Technician to GIS Analyst; GIS Analyst to GIS Programmer; or GIS Developer/Programmer to a GIS Architect. Basic familiarity with geospatial/GIS syntax, ArcGIS, and data science (pandas) is helpful, though not necessary.

From the Publisher
What are the key takeaways of this book?
Python can help new and experienced GIS professionals perform analysis, data management, and cartography. Esri has integrated Python into all components of ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, making it a crucial skillset for any GIS professional. Python automation is something all ArcGIS users benefit from knowing, and helps make for a more lucrative and rewarding career.
In the book, you’ll see that geospatial data science is made easy using ArcGIS Pro and its integrated Notebooks. We teach you how to streamline your workflows in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online using Python, freeing up your time for other tasks. We made the choice to focus on using Notebooks for writing, storing, and sharing your code within ArcGIS Pro, because they make it easier to collaborate and share ideas.
What makes this book different from other books on Python for ArcGIS?
The new tools available in ArcGIS Pro, especially Notebooks, have made it possible to use ArcGIS in data science, but this has not been fully explained in any other resource. We also haven’t seen any advanced coverage of automating cartography with Python – which we build up to in this book from the basics.
The case studies demonstrate valuable real-world examples of applying Python to GIS workflows. In addition, ArcGIS API for Python can really help you automate many of your ArcGIS Online tasks, but it isn’t covered much in other books and the documentation from Esri is not as complete as for ArcPy and geoprocessing tools.
What is your favorite part of the book?
Bill: While map automation is something I have used extensively in my career, I really like the chapters on ArcGIS API for Python. They show you how you can manage your data and your team on ArcGIS Online using Python with Notebooks while in ArcGIS Pro.
Silas: The case studies we’ve included are unique and comprehensive, and help illustrate a professional level of Python analysis with GIS. They cover a broad variety of topics, including downloading attachments, using machine learning to predict crop yields, and producing a map series for an environmental justice report.
